My Lighthouse

I have always had a secret fascination with lighthouses. I am not a collector, nor have I seen many in my lifetime (yet), but I really do like them for a reason. It all started when I first saw Pete’s Dragon when I was very young. My favorite song from the movie is ‘Candle on the Water’ – when Nora is singing from the top of her lighthouse to her lost-at-sea-husband.  She is promising her husband that she will be his guiding light back home and that her love for him ‘will always burn’.

lighthouseA few days ago I begged my husband to take me away from the house (since I   spend every day at home now). We ended up driving out to The Harbor in Rockwall (located on the shore of Lake Ray Hubbard). I made a beeline toward the lighthouse as soon as I saw it and immediately took a picture of it. Don’t be deceived by the picture – the light house is not that big. It’s only maybe 40 feet tall and there is no way up. Because we were there during the day time it was not on, but I am assuming that it is lit at night. For the few minutes we were walking around I thought about a few reasons why lighthouses seem so symbolic to me.

-it serves as a guiding light for all who are lost
-the light never goes out, it is a constant
-the light is bright and shines far into the distance, breaking through the darkness
-it is tall and strong, built to withstand the wind, rain and the waves
-it is a symbol of the gospel, the light of Christ

I know many people who have been my ‘lighthouse’ through different times in my life; friends, neighbors, church leaders, teachers and even strangers. Rarely do I get all sappy and gushy so publicly, but today I need to, and I need to be sappy and gushy about my husband, because he is one of my many lighthouses and I am so grateful for him always patiently guiding me through rough waters and little storms in my life.

I’ll be your candle on the water
My love for you will always burn
I know you’re lost and drifting
But the clouds are lifting
Don’t give up you’ll have somewhere to turn

I’ll be your candle on the water
‘Till ev’ry wave is warm and bright
My soul is there beside you
Let this candle guide you
Soon you’ll see a golden stream of light

A cold and friendless tide has found you
Don’t let the stormy darkness pull you down
I’ll paint a ray of hope around you
Circling in the air
Lighted by a prayer

I’ll be your candle on the water
This flame inside of me will grow
Keep holding on you’ll make it
Here’s my hand so take it
Look for me reaching out to show
As sure as rivers flow
I’ll never let you go

That’s so sweet! Glad you got a chance to get out of the house and go to The Harbor especially since the weather has been fantastic these last few days!

    Hi Steph,
this is a very nice lighthouse picture. A friend of mine has been looking for a picture of a lighthouse to use in his website and this particular picture, (although needs some tweaking to serve its task – mainly colour tweaks) is almost exactly what we had been looking for, as it captures the dynamics of the image we were looking for. Is there a possibility to use this image in our design, and are there any costs involved?

    Thanking you in advance.
